While ELA is my passion and preferred subject area, I have learned MORE about teaching math since it didn’t come as easy for me. The areas I listed are the specific areas in which I have coached teachers and/or created materials to assist in student mastery.
Number sense mastery is a base skill for this step! Accuracy is also imperative. I can coach students by teaching steps and coaching them along as they practice, practice, practice.
Let’s take a crack at increasing that fact fluency. Students don’t have time to think of basic solutions to do higher level math involving multiple steps. Teachers are reporting that students simply “just do not have memorization of basic math facts.”
Students MUST have good “base 10” understanding and place value understanding. I will use concrete tools and examples to assist in connecting pathways for student understanding.
Once highly mastered skills, time and money often slip through the cracks of education. Starting with what they already know, learners will become more confident in their ability to manage time and money.
Real World Problems cause real learning problems for some students.
First, students must make sense of what is being asked. They have to apply perseverance if it’s not obvious at first. That’s a mindset and an attitude that can be learned and even altered.
Next, comes logic and reasoning to help students solve the problem. They should be able to select the proper method for solving with these skills.
After all of this, students should be able to justify selected strategies and evaluate if ideas make sense.
They should also be able to model in various ways such as with graphs, charts and symbols. All while attending to precision!
